The Fountain

The Fountain is like a puzzle that fits together very well. Aronofsky weaves together three stories about the truth and consequences of the search and attainment of eternal life. The stories unfold within past, present and future scenarios that illustrate a perspective on eternal life that is relevant to the historical period and defines development of human consciouness over time.

Aronofsky fills his film with a lyrical beauty, a natural grace and rhythm that tracks the story using the emotional journey of his leads rather than the linear plot lines as his guide. He shifts easily and naturally between time lines, each time period informing and altering the others, the characters slowly learning to grapple with questions of life, death, love gained and soon to be lost.

Fantastic in every sense, this film is indeed poetry, and a beautiful testament to love and the cycle of life and the impermanence of death. A man and a woman, Adam and Eve, trying to break the chains of time and be happy together. This is the ultimate romantic sci-fi movie!
